The City of Calgary encourages Calgarians to be water-wise and create a YardSmart yard this spring to help maintain their yards and gardens. YardSmart offers online resources and practical advice to help Calgarians establish and maintain yards and gardens well-suited to Calgary's growing conditions and use less water. Tips include:
Watering early in the mornings or later in the evenings.
Avoid watering when it has rained or if there is rain in the forecast.
Only giving plants the water they need.
Mowing less often.
Replacing lawns with garden features that use less water and help absorb rainwater.
Rich soil and mulch should be added to reduce evaporation.
YardSmart plant lists are also available for those wanting to expand their yards this year. Visit calgary.ca/yardsmart for more information on how you can do your part to conserve water in your yard and garden. Together we can make every drop count.
